Thinking back to high school in Westborough, I see that visual art was already a part of my life that was that I found impossible to extricate myself from. Nor would I have wanted to! Art is what I fall into whenever I need to retreat or whenever I need to move forward. After working in my studio, the world is brighter, every object and face more beautiful, the colors glorious. I particularly find this true after immersing myself in watercolor painting. I’ve been in Shrewsbury for nearly 20 years, and I now live on the lake with my husband, Gary, and our two boys. I teach visual art at Milford High School where my classes range from “The Art of Fashion” to “Cooperative Art” for students with special needs, to Advanced Placement Art History. Many people ask what I love teaching the most. My answer: Every class is my favorite! Every student is different and wonderful and each art form has its own appeal and meaning to me. Nothing makes my day more than seeing students succeed whether in art or in another aspect of their life. I hope to create opportunities for success thereby enabling them to continue succeeding! What free time I have is spent in my studio which overlooks the water. I am currently concentrating on the art of needle punch and beaded embroidery, although fiber and textile arts, in general, have been my focus for years. I graduated from UMass Dartmouth with a BFA in painting – a skill that greatly influences my fiber arts. Occasionally, I’ll dip back into watercolor or acrylic, and I’ve been having a great time drawing graphite portraits of celebrities as well. There’s great satisfaction in creating a decent likeness! I have filmed two shows for HGTV and the DIY network as well as having work published in SchoolArts magazine and Belle Armoire. I hope to continue publishing – eventually I hope to publish a decorative arts curriculum for high school art teachers. Until then, it’s back to the studio! - Carolann Tebbetts |
